Young people are not the root of all evil in our society10.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 2nd Jun 2008 The Conservative Party introduced the idea of Hug-a-Hoody and the Labour Party the kissing-judge initiative in a juvenile drug court. However, it is only local communities and local volunteers that can address the needs of our young people. Andrew Aalders-Dunthorne, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, who is also a volunteer scout leader, has recently returned from a three day camping expedition in North Norfolk. Andrew commented "The seventeen boys and one girl worked and played hard throughout the weekend - and it was a pleasure to see, they completed the tasks and enjoyed each others company - when the media and dare I say it society 'blame' the youth of today for many of our evils. Based on my experience we have got it so very wrong!" "While I recognise that a uniformed movement like the scouts isn't every child's idea of a worthwhile activity the principle is the same - if we as adults show interest in them and earn their respect and are prepared to offer leadership - in most cases respect is given back - and all that energy can be directed in a positive way." "I don't advocate hug-a-hoody, in fact when young people have been marginalised like this it is actually too late, but we should be more tolerant of young people and more responsive to their needs." Andrew is calling for a young persons champion to be chosen for every Parish and community across the constituency. "Projects do not need to be expensive or complex, in fact the simpler the formula the more likely the success, young people need respect and positive role models - and a place to hang out!" Andrew concluded.
